System requirements

Supported operating systems​

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • A supported 64-bit Windows PC
  • A normal user account; administrator rights are requested only for system-wide actions such as autostart for all users

The application is delivered as a self-contained Windows program. A separate .NET installation is normally not required.

Storage and connectivity​

The destination must have enough space for the first copy and the versions retained afterwards. O&O AutoBackup displays the estimated backup size and available capacity during setup.

Supported destination types include:

  • Local fixed disks and separate internal disks
  • USB hard disks, SSDs, and flash storage
  • Windows network paths (UNC)
  • WebDAV servers
  • S3-compatible object storage

Credentials and network access may be required for remote destinations. For unattended runs, make sure the destination remains accessible in the Windows session that runs O&O AutoBackup.

Practical recommendations​

Use a destination on a different physical device from the source. A second folder on the same disk helps with accidental edits, but it does not protect against disk failure, theft, or ransomware affecting that disk.

For laptops, a removable drive plus run when connected is often the simplest routine. For always-on PCs, a NAS or another local disk works well with a regular schedule.

Locked files

Files held exclusively open by another application may have to wait for a later run. Close the application that owns the file and run the backup again. O&O AutoBackup reports skipped or in-use files rather than silently claiming they were protected.
