The recovery environment

The O&O BlueCon recovery environment is a small Windows system based on the Windows recovery environment (Windows PE). It starts from the boot media and runs entirely in the memory of the computer. The Windows installation on the disk is not started; O&O BlueCon accesses it as data.

Why a separate environment

A Windows installation that does not start cannot repair itself. And while Windows is running, many of its files, the registry and its drivers are in use and locked. In the recovery environment, the installation on the disk is idle: its files can be checked, replaced and changed, and drivers, services and updates that prevent the start can be deactivated or removed.

Drive X: and what is lost at restart

The recovery environment uses the drive X: in memory. Programs, settings and temporary files of the recovery environment are stored there.

  • Everything on X: is lost when you restart or shut down the computer.
  • Save files you want to keep, such as logs, exports and reports, on a drive of the computer or on a USB drive.
  • Changes to the Windows installation on the disk – repairs, registry edits, password changes – are permanent.

Drivers

The boot media contain the drivers of the PC that created them, plus the drivers of the recovery environment itself. On other hardware, a storage or network driver may be missing; the start wizard then offers to load it. See Load drivers.

Languages

The boot media are in German when the media creator shows German, and in English for every other language of the media creator. The start wizard, the desktop and the programs follow the language of the boot media.
