The target system
The target system is the Windows installation on the disk of the computer that O&O BlueCon services. Programs such as O&O CheckAndRepair, O&O RegEditor and O&O UserManager work on the target system, not on the recovery environment.
How O&O BlueCon finds it
When the recovery environment starts, the start wizard:
- Loads the drivers on the boot media.
- Searches for BitLocker-encrypted drives.
- Gives every volume a drive letter.
- Searches all drives for Windows installations.
If it finds exactly one installation, it selects it. The volumes of the target system then get the same drive letters they have in that Windows, so the Windows drive is usually C: in the recovery environment as well.
Several installations
If a computer has several Windows installations, the start wizard reports it and you choose one under Target. You can change the selection later; programs started afterwards use the new target system. See Prepare the target system.
When no installation is found
The start wizard cannot find an installation when:
- the drive is encrypted with BitLocker and still locked – unlock it, see Unlock a BitLocker drive;
- the storage controller needs a driver that the boot media do not contain – load it, see Load drivers;
- the drive is defective or not connected.
