Repair a Windows installation
When Windows no longer starts because system files or the file system are damaged, O&O CheckAndRepair checks and repairs them from the recovery environment. It uses the Windows tools DISM, SFC and CHKDSK and runs them against the installation on the disk.
Prerequisites: O&O BlueCon is started and the Windows installation is selected as the target system (Prepare the target system).
Check and repair
- Click Start > Programs > SystemRecovery > O&O CheckAndRepair.
- Check the installation under Windows installation:. The target system of the start wizard is preselected; choose another one in the list if necessary.
- Select the areas to check:
- Check component store – the Windows component store (DISM)
- Check system files – the protected system files (SFC)
- Check disk – the file system of the Windows drive (CHKDSK)
- Click Check and wait for the result.
- If problems are found, click Repair.
- Wait until the repair is finished, then restart the computer from its disk.
The functions Check Windows recovery environment and Windows Update are not available for an installation that is not running.
Keep the computer connected to power and let the repair finish. Cancel stops the work but does not undo changes already made.
Result
O&O CheckAndRepair shows the result for each area. Show log file opens the details. The logs are stored on the RAM drive X: of the recovery environment; copy them to a USB drive if you need them later.
If problems remain after the repair, see Troubleshooting.
The O&O CheckAndRepair manual describes the program in detail.
