FileInspector
FileInspector helps you identify files that account for drive usage or fragmentation. It works with the selected drive and the information gathered by analysis.
Inspect files
- Select and analyze a drive.
- Open FileInspector from the drive inspection controls.
- Choose a file group.
- Select a file to load its status and highlight its placement in the block view.
- Compare its path, size, fragment count, and ROI factor where displayed.
Available groups include largest files, most fragmented files, largest fragmented files, fragmented metadata, and locked files. The selected filter determines which files appear; No files available can mean that no files match it.
Interpret what you find
A large file with a few large fragments has a different optimization cost from a small file split into thousands of fragments. Fragment count alone does not determine whether rewriting the entire file is worthwhile.
The ROI factor column explains the benefit relative to the writes required for SOLID optimization. A file with a low benefit may remain fragmented intentionally. See ROI factor and reporting.
Locked files can be held by applications, services, or Windows. Closing an application may release an ordinary data file; system files may require boot-time optimization. Do not close services or force-unlock files merely to improve a statistic.
Use file information in a maintenance plan
If a frequently changing database or virtual disk dominates the results, coordinate maintenance with the application that owns it. Use file rules to exclude files that should not participate in normal optimization. Review inclusion rules as well, because a matching inclusion takes precedence over an exclusion.
Do not infer that a file is safe to delete because it is large or fragmented. FileInspector is a diagnostic view; use the owning application or a reviewed cleanup workflow to remove data.
