Rescue Media And Fortress Mode

Recovery preparation matters before a failure happens. O&O DiskImage provides recovery options for situations where normal Windows can no longer start.

Fortress Mode

Fortress Mode installs O&O DiskImage into the local Windows Recovery Environment. It is the fastest recovery option for the same PC because no separate USB stick is required.

Use Fortress Mode when:

  • You want recovery built into the current computer.
  • You need to restore the system drive even when Windows will not boot.
  • You prefer not to depend on removable recovery media.

Fortress Mode depends on Windows Recovery Environment being available and enabled.

Bootable Rescue Media

Bootable rescue media starts O&O DiskImage outside the installed Windows environment. Use it when:

  • The local recovery environment is unavailable.
  • You need a USB stick or ISO that can be used on another PC.
  • You are preparing for disk replacement or severe system failure.

Keep rescue media in a safe place and test that the computer can boot from it before you need it.

Recovery Checklist

  • Create at least one full PC backup.
  • Store the backup on external or network storage.
  • Configure Fortress Mode or create rescue media.
  • Confirm you know how to access firmware boot options if using USB media.
  • Keep backup passwords available for encrypted backups.
