Export

Exporting writes a key and its contents to a .reg file. The exported files are compatible with the Windows Registry Editor, so they can be shared, archived, or re-imported later.

Export a key

  1. Select the key (branch) you want to export.
  2. Open the File menu and choose Export.
  3. Choose a location and a file name and confirm.

Figure: Exporting a key branch to a .reg file.

The exported file contains the selected key, all of its subkeys, and all of their values, in the standard .reg text format.

Why export before editing

Exporting is the easiest way to protect yourself before a change:

  • Export the key you are about to edit.
  • Make your change.
  • If the result is wrong, import the exported file to restore the original data.

Other ways to export

  • Favourites: the Manage Favourites dialog can export the branches of several selected favourites into one file.
  • Search results: the search result list can save selected matches to a .reg file with Save Results As....
note

Exporting reads data from the registry and writes it to a file; it never changes the registry itself.
